Author Notes

Neil Sclater switched his career from engineering in the military/aerospace industry to writing and editing in the field of electromechanical and electronic technology. After years as a staff editor for engineering magazines, he set up his own consulting firm in technical communications. Mr. Sclater contributed hundreds of articles to various engineering publications. He has authored or co-authored 11 McGraw-Hill Professional books, including two earlier editions of this book.

Choice Review

This fascinating volume by engineer/author Sclater would be an ideal asset to any design engineer's or inventor's bookshelf. With emphasis on mechanical engineering design concepts, it is a collection of mostly mechanisms along with other mechanical devices, all pointing to the fundamental design ideas of transmitting forces/torques from one location/axis to another, and similarly transmitting forces/torques in linear and circular motions. The 19 chapters in this new edition (4th ed., 2007; 1st ed., 1991) cover systems for motion control, robotics, linkages, gears, cams, clutches/brakes, clamping devices, chain and belt devices, screw-actuated devices, shaft couplings, and more. The introductory chapter is an excellent summary of linkages and mechanisms. The last three chapters address recent ideas in mechanical engineering design, such as 3-D and rapid prototyping, micro- and nano-level tools, materials, and metrology. Other recent concepts, such as atomic force microscopy (discussed only very briefly), microfluidic designs, or white light interferometry, are not included. The book makes very interesting reading; the diagrams are clear and detailed, and the text provides enough information to convey the main ideas to technically literate readers. Valuable for all mechanical, industrial, robotic, and MEMS engineering designers, and a useful reference for junior- or senior-level undergraduate mechanical design courses.
