Summary
Summary
This volume brings together a broad range of academics, school-based educators, and policymakers to address research, policy, and practice issues related to improving the education of English language learners in U.S. schools today. It emphasizes throughout that instructional improvements cannot be achieved via curriculum alone--teachers are key to improving the education of this large and growing population of students. The focus is on the quality of preparation and development of pre-service and in-service educators.
Contributors include leading educators and researchers in the field and from nationally recognized professional development programs. Their recommendations range from promising new professional development practices to radical changes in current state and federal policy.
Preparing Quality Educators for English Language Learners is an important resource to help teacher educators, administrators, and policymakers address critical issues as they develop programs for English language learners.
Reviews 1
Choice Review
This volume of nine papers presented by researchers, teachers, and policy makers presents a broad perspective of approaches to improve professional development for teachers of English learners. Topics include graduate courses offered in both Spanish and English, discussions with teachers to develop additive concepts of linguistic diversity, a review of professional development models, and a call for teachers to participate in action research in their classrooms. Two essays discuss issues of school leadership and the need for principals who are moral stewards, educators, and community builders. Editors Tellez and Waxman invite institutions serving English language learners to "foster professional interaction, build advocacy skills and facilitate dissemination of knowledge about high-quality teaching." This volume reminds teacher educators that teachers are the focal point for improving education for this growing population of students, and that teachers must understand the connection between academic learning and language development. The authors provide many resources for discussion and for action to improve teacher quality. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students, researchers, faculty, and practitioners. L.
