This addition to the biotechnology reference literature concentrates more on the technology than the biology. It updates the previous dictionaries on the same topic but does not replace them. When compared to the J. Coombs Dictionary of Biotechnology (1986), it has fewer definitions from the discipline of biology but many more and more complete definitions of the machinery and engineering processes that constitute biotechnology. It is part of a new American Chemical Society series called "ACS Professional Reference Books." Many of the other titles in the series are aimed at the practicing chemist; undergraduate libraries should be very selective. However, this volume is a necessity for any biotechnology or complete biology collection. N. J. Bird Massachusetts Institute of Technology
