Booklist Review
The Butzows provide suggestions for primary-level thematic units centered on 15 picture books that involve environmental issues. For each title, they offer a summary of the story, a synopsis of the science concepts introduced, lists of content-related vocabulary and resources (both print and online), and extensive recommendations for classroom projects and activities. The selected titles (which include Ox-Cart Man, by Donald Hall [1979]; The Little House, by Virginia Lee Burton [1978]; and Letting Swift River Go, by Jane Yolen [1992]) should be readily available in most libraries. Activities are clearly explained and within the grasp of the intended audience; a few paper-and-pencil assignments are included, but most will actively engage children in research or higher-level thinking. Give this one to teachers hoping to perk up their science or social studies lessons or to followers of the Book Links approach to teaching and literature. --Kay Weisman
