CoVan discusses risk minimization and safety engineering from the vantage point of an accident investigator. The book's strongest feature is that the author provides detailed definitions of a comprehensive list of terms used in personal injury cases; well over 30 work circumstances are addressed within a framework of personal work habits and proper task design. The book presents functions of a well-planned safety program, operational guidelines for safety personnel, documentation needed for accident prevention, and analysis of personal injury data. Although CoVan does not cover details of implementation, his three introductory chapters address the philosophy, rationale, and objectives of programs for injury prevention and for accident investigation. The last two chapters are dedicated to a generous list of references and to detailed analyses of selected case histories. Recommended. Upper-division undergraduate through professional. P. F.
