Booklist Review

In a volume as big and informative as its companion, Kingdoms of Europe: An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Ruling Monarchs from Ancient Times to the Present (Booklist 78:1222 My 15 82), Gurney now covers other past and present kingdoms of the Eastern Hemisphere, from Egypt to Swaziland to Vietnam. The author offers learned discussions of the political history of each nation-state, with emphasis on the evolution of the monarchal traditions within those countries; consequential individual sovereigns are also highlighted. For each country, a helpful chronological listing of all the monarchs is provided. Heavily illustrated not beautifully, but very interestingly. Index.
