A valuable and timely introduction on intelligent computer-assisted instruction, this book seeks to emphasize the importance of applying artificial intelligence principles to computer-assisted instruction (CAI) through a detailed examination of several well-developed examples. First, a general groundwork for intelligent CAI is established. Second, two systems, PRO ST and Micro-SEARCH, are presented as examples in education. Third, intelligent CAI in training as illustrated by STEAMER is examined. Fourth, methodology for building intelligent tutors is discussed as illustrated by the TEACHER'S APPRENTICE system. The book concludes with development strategies for implementing intelligent CAI systems. Using a collection of articles, the book's unified approach to CAI systems gives the reader a solid introduction to the subject from an exemplary standpoint. Not intended as a technical treatise, this book provides the readers with a tutorial yet current introduction to CAI with particular emphasis on artificial intelligence applications. For the serious readers, extensive chapter references point to other more technical works in that area. Recommended for upper-division undergraduates.-J.Y. Cheung, University of Oklahoma
