Although this book proposes to be an introduction to the philosophical and psychological study of inference, it is, in fact, a relatively advanced summary of theory and research in selected areas of philosophy and psychology. Despite the scant attempt to integrate or synthesize, the various topics in linguistic understanding, social pragmatics, normative theories of reason, mental logic, mental representation, and reasoning biases are treated intelligently and efficiently. The book includes a rich array of materials from psychology, philosophy, and artificial intelligence within its various dialogues, but the work suffers from the lack of an authorial standpoint.
