Summary

Summary

This chemical engineering text provides a balanced treatment of the central issues in process control: process modelling, process dynamics, control systems, and process instrumentation. There is also full coverage of classical control system design methods, advanced control strategies, and digital control techniques. Includes numerous examples and exercises.

Choice Review

Three leaders in the field have collaborated to produce an excellent book oriented toward process control in the chemical processing industries. The 28 chapters cover all of the basic tools and many advanced aspects of the subject. In addition to the usual theory, there are many practical topics such as controller tuning, transfer function estimation based on process data, and advanced control strategies. A large section on digital control is also included, as is a chapter devoted to the often-neglected relationship between process design and process control. Theory and practice are effectively mixed and well illustrated by many examples. The knowledge and skill of the authors are apparent in virtually every paragraph, and their thoughts are presented clearly and completely in a readable style. A unique strength is placement of the latest topics at appropriate points in the text. For example, internal model control is presented in the same chapter as traditional controller design methods. With this integrated approach, the authors avoid the temptation to lump recent advances into a single chapter at the end of the book. This book is suitable for undergraduate and graduate self-study, reference, or text. -K. I. Mumme, University of Maine at Orono
