Choice Review

Mukherji, head of the physics department at a college of engineering in India, discusses topics from solid-state physics. The book is unique for introducing students to topics of practical interest. Part 1 treats theories in crystallography, thermoelectricity, semiconductors, and acoustics; part 2 introduces selected topics from wave optics, quantum physics, radioactivity, and superconductivity. The author clearly assumes that students using her book would have acquired the basic concepts from an introductory, calculus-based, physics course. The middle chapters treat aspects of wave optics and are the strongest in content. Mukherji explains ideas well and derives many of the essential relationships. The first chapter on crystals is very descriptive and serves as a good introduction to further study of the subject. The author has solved end-of-chapter problems and poses traditional, essay-type questions for students to answer. A highlight of the book is the good line diagrams accompanying the text. Despite a few spelling mistakes, the book can serve as a useful supplement in an upper-level course in an undergraduate physics program. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
