Abstract:
Islamic art is a complementary manifestation of the Divine in its outer and inner senses, nevertheless an integration on all its features are sought, ultimately leading to Unity, the most fundamental prnciple in Islam, the Tauhid. Every external form is complemented by an inner reality which is hidden, the internal essense. The 'zahir' is the sensible form, receptive to the viewer. While the inner essence, the 'batin' lied hidden, the inward reality in which the beauty of every object resides. These inherent, permanent qualities in unity symbolize the Universal Spirit which, encompass the universe, the Divine Essence from which all creation emanated. In order to know a thing in its completeness one must seek its outward and inward reality in understanding symbols through intellectual and philosophic gnosis. The traditional carving is a symbolic significance of the Divine Essense processing both qualitative and quantitative quality in its being, the 'zahir' and 'batin'. Design motives in carvings possess all richness in a harmonious tapestry of design patterns, a powerful reminder of the "The One" which reveals the manifastation of the "The One" in a hierarchical structure towards Unity. The concept of unity is seen through the traditional design motives of the craftmen. With the hell of symbols, the traditional craftmen express the knowledge acquired through the doctrine in sacred forms as the guiding principles in the teaching of the tradition. The crafts are viewed as theophany of the Absolute. His Essence viewed through the microcosmic of being as revealed by the artifact produced. The created works are like arts of nature encompassed within it the Divine Essence. It is greatly hoped however that this work will incite interest among scholars and architects in pursuing the art in light of the Divine Principles rather than merely an historical borrowing or material techniques. This work forms the continuation to the series of studies on traditional Islamic architecture in access to the remarkable richness of traditional carvings in light of Unity.
