Summary

Summary

Agricultural production is highly dependent on weather, climate and water availability and is adversely affected by the weather and climate-related disasters. Droughts and natural disasters such as floods can result in crop failures, food insecurity, famine, loss of property and life, mass migration and negative national economic growth. It may not be possible to prevent the occurrence of these natural disasters, but the resultant disastrous effects can be reduced considerably through proper planning and effective preparation. Vulnerability associated with the hazards of natural disasters can be controlled to some extent by accurate and timely prediction and by taking counter-measures to reduce their impacts on agriculture. This book based on an expert meeting held in Beijing, China should be of interest to all organizations involved in disasters reduction and mitigation of extreme events.

Reviews 1

Choice Review

Natural disasters, with their increasing intensity and frequency and their devastating effect on agriculture, are of growing concern. Effective integration of climatic information and products and use of local adaptation strategies are necessary to reduce the effect of these disasters. This book is the outgrowth of a 2004 Chinese Meteorology Administration conference whose objectives were to review the role of climate and weather information in reducing the impacts, to acquire this information in different countries that are more susceptible to natural disasters, to identify the shortcomings and limitations of current disaster management, and to discuss education and training and their role in natural disaster reduction problems. This book features 28 expert contributors; all are employed at national organizations that supply information about national disasters. The many sections include "Impacts of Natural Disasters in Agriculture, Rangeland and Forestry," "The Role of Disaster Preparedness in National Planning with Specific Reference to Droughts," "Impacts of Sand Storms/Dust Storms on Agriculture," "Disaster Reduction Planning and Response: The Example of National Drought Policy in USA," "Agricultural Drought Policy and Practices in Australia," and "Agricultural Drought Mitigation and Management of Sustained Agricultural Development in India." Sufficient tables and figures and adequate references enhance the text; color photographs add interest. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. All levels. H. W. Ockerman Ohio State University
