Abstract:
This thesis describes a study into the performance of various forms of earth reinforcement systems by means of direct shear and pull-out tests. In order to perform large scale pull-out tests, a stiff box having dimensions lmxlmxlmx was developed. The tests were undertaken using reinforcing anchors formed from polymeric straps and pipes, and steel materials, used in conjunction with Leighton Buzzard sand. The results of the direct shear tests on the reinforcing straps conducted with the different grades of sands, showed that the peak shear strength was a function of the sand particle size as well as the surface roughness of the straps. The results of the pull-out tests on the reinforcing straps in Leighton Buzzard sand, grade 14/25, showed that withina specific range, thefriction coefficient cwhen the vertical pressure increased. Above this range the value of the friction coefficient remained constant. The presence of a transverse bar anchor resulted in a substantial increase in the pull-out resistance of the reinforcement system. Relatively flexible transverse anchors, which were able to bend, were seen to be superior to stiff anchors. The pull-out resistances of all the transverse anchors weregreater than the equivalent triangular anchors. The present study culminatedwith the development of a polymeric anchored earth system (PEAN). The system, which is potentially more durable than conventional reinforced soil systems offers economic as well as technical asdvantages.
