Abstract:
For centuries, lime was the crucial ingredient of building mortars, plasters, and renders. During the 20th century, it was largely replaced by cement and gypsum. However, an understanding of the chemistry of lime, together with an appreciation of its unique characteristics and properties, is fundamental to anyone interested in building conservation. This video explains how lime is produced and examines a number of lime applications in the repair of buildings.
