This new edition continues the fine tradition of its three predecessors (1st ed., 1961; 2nd ed., 1976; 3rd ed., 1988). Since 1988, continuing rapid advances in the field of shock and vibrations have led to the addition of several new areas, including chapters devoted to pyrotechnic shock testing, properties of rubber, and shaft misalignment. In all, there are 44 chapters, ranging from basic theory of linear and nonlinear vibrations to measurement techniques to computer applications, including finite element modeling. Many sections contain applications appropriate for the practicing engineer. Extensive references are found at chapter ends. The most likely users of this handbook, aside from the design professionals who deal with these topics, would be graduate students and upper-division undergraduates. An excellent reference book for libraries serving engineering programs at any level. H. I. Epstein University of Connecticut
