Choice Review

A very computer hardware- and software-oriented discussion of the use of personal computers in laboratory and industrial process monitoring, process data gathering, and small process control applications. Despite its title, it discusses all of the major topics of control system hardware and software. Except for the details in examples, there is little discussion of the application aspects of these topics. The discussion emphasizes 286 AT personal computers, which might tend to date the text in this fast-changing era of computer developments. A wide range of accessory boards that can be procured for IBM and IBM-compatible machines is discussed, as is a large selection of programming packages for various uses. To the extent that these products are generic in their use and continue to be supported by their producers, this discussion is laudable. However, as noted above, much of this material can become quickly dated. Recommended for undergraduate students of computer applications in monitoring and control systems, and for industrial personnel contemplating small plant applications.-T. J.
