Choice Review

Manufacturing in the US is undergoing dramatic changes in response to challenges from overseas, particularly Japan. Technological innovations have been well publicized, but their impacts on administrative decision making have received only recent attention. Ettlie (University of Michigan) is the first to offer a book on the subject. The integration of manufacturing innovations with management developments needed for implementation is known as synchronous innovation, a relatively new concept. The author provides examples and cases documenting the results of utilizing that concept as well as of employing newer manufacturing technologies (e.g., computer-aided design, robotics, automated assembly, computer-integrated manufacturing). The book also contains tables, figures, exhibits, and an extensive list of references. The author is careful to explain all the technical terms used, which makes the book accessible to a broader audience than its primary target, manufacturing managers. It could be read with benefit by those engaged in any field of business or by anyone seriously interested in the impact of manufacturing on the overall economy. W. C. Struning Seton Hall University
