Choice Review

An excellent book for those who desire an in-depth introduction to computers. This book, geared to graduate level, might best be described as a one-stop catch-up text for those who have already acquired academic maturity and wish to gain an understanding of computers. The material moves along at a brisk pace and includes topics ranging from computer architecture through numerical analysis. In between, many programming topics are covered, related when appropriate to hands-on applications using the IBM-PC. The C programming language is used to convey programming constructs and data structures. In order to understand the material on numerical methods provided in later chapters, a prerequisite knowledge of basic differential and integral calculus is required. The contents of this book, taken as a whole, provide general information that computer science graduates should have retained from their undergraduate experiences. However, information on more specific topics (e.g., compiler design and operating system internals), usually found in such curricula, will have to be sought elsewhere. Highly recommended for both undergraduate and graduate libraries. -F. H. Wild, III, University of Rhode Island
