The use of the word "encyclopedia" in this work's title is inaccurate; it is really a compilation of short research studies on topics related to e-collaboration ("collaboration among individuals engaged in a common task using electronic technologies"). This work includes over 100 articles by more than 200 authors worldwide, and will likely expand with additional volumes. Though a global perspective on the experiences and practices of those who collaborate with technology is valuable, some article titles are too abstract to be useful. For example, "Evolving Gender Communication Issues in E-Collaboration" should have come under a heading like "Gender." Likewise, "A Matrix for E-Collaboration in Rural Canadian Schools" or "Scenarios for E-Collaboration Are Only Part of the Story" will send readers clamoring to the index to look up their topic. (A minor inconvenience, the index is laid out without indentations, making skimming for a topic more difficult.) Each article includes a short bibliography. Definitions of seven "key terms" follow each article, but collecting these into an appendix would have been more helpful. With content that will become dated quickly and an inconvenient format, this volume has limited usefulness. Summing Up: Optional. Graduate students and researchers. S. Nowicki Kalamazoo College
