Choice Review

Cartin presents an outstanding survey of the quality function within the total organization. He focuses on all stakeholders, namely, suppliers, consumers, employees, and managers, contending that they, more than any other factor, underlie the rise in productivity and the standard of living. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1 (nine chapters) discusses quality and productivity fundamentals, management and organizational change, employee empowerment, customer satisfaction, supplier quality management, quality planning improvement, the total quality function, and quality costs. Part 2 (five chapters) covers tools for continuous improvement, benchmarking, quality standards and awards, concurrent deployment, continuous engineering, and design experiments. The final part consists of five appendixes: an example of the application of quality function deployment (A); a case study in benchmarking (B); a glossary of terms (C); Deming's 14 points for management (D); and quality-related Web sites (E). The book contains brief examples, references, additional readings, and discussion questions. Simple and readable graphs will appeal to students and management practitioners alike. Moreover, the continuous improvement tools presented identify competencies relevant for management majors. Cartin, an authority on total quality management, shares his consulting experience with readers in this well-written book. Highly recommended for upper-division undergraduate through professional collections. K. J. Constas Fayetteville State University
