Choice Review
A valuable addition to any collection of works on leadership. Conger and Kanungo (both of McGill University) fill a void in the existing literature on leadership by focusing on the more narrow phenomenon known as charismatic leadership. Beginning with an interesting discussion of the origin of the concept charisma and its evolution into popular usage in the context of leadership, the authors continue in subsequent chapters to provide a comprehensive, integrated theoretical background to the topic from relevant disciplines, including sociology, psychology, and management. In addition, issues of the origins, development, and limitations of charismatic leadership are thoroughly addressed. Although already highly readable and inherently interesting, the book's references to famous leaders (e.g., Lee Iacocca, Martin Luther King Jr., and John F. Kennedy) and infamous leaders (e.g., Reverend Jim Jones) anchor the more abstract and theoretical references in terms relevant to most readers. The book is very logically organized, and contains clear and relevant diagrams and tables plus a detailed, useful subject index. Upper-division and graduate collections. -D. L. Wells, Creighton University
