Abstract:
For data transmission, be it voice, text or videotext, the need for thesignals to be transmitted at the maximum possible speed is always required. But, for higher bit-rate, the performance of bit-error rate is reduced due to the presence of intersymbol interference. To justify the problem, certain mechanisms need to be employed in the design of receiver.One of the solutions to the problem is to include the equalization processfor receiver. The receiver is designed to use a form of non-linear equalizer and is known as block decision-feedback receiver. The configuration of the receiver consists of block detector, operating based on the theory andprinciple of maximumlikehood sequence estimator, and a canceller which is alinear feedback filter. The optimum configuration of the receiver for specific application can be achieved by adjusting the size of the block detector.The model of system is designed in such a way to reflect the practical environment that may effect the performance of the receiver. Additive noise andthe Rayleigh fading are included. Meanwhile, a raised-cosine baseband channel is simulated to include the effect of bandwidth limitation and noises.Based onthe model designed, the bit-error rate of the receiver is measuredfor various bit-rates, block sizes and different standard deviations fornoises. The simulation results show that bit-error rate reduces with increase in block size, while the increase in bit-rate for a given block size gives higher value for bit-error rate.
