Choice Review

Editor Nof has done a creditable job in creating this timely revision to a landmark publication (1st ed., CH, Dec'85) in the fast emerging field of industrial robotics. This handbook has 12 sections and 66 chapters by an international team of experts; the 33 chapters from the first edition have also been thoroughly revised, updated, and consolidated. A CD-ROM with video clips has been added to demonstrate examples of robotic intelligence used by industry, with interviews of some leaders in the area of robotics. The CD-ROM nicely complements the contents of the handbook. Almost all aspects of industrial robotics are covered in the 12 parts. Beginning with the relatively brief historical background, topics covered include mechanical design; control and intelligence; programming and intelligence, organization, management, and economics; planning, design, and integration; processes and operations; examples applications, ranging from microsurgery to space exploration; use of robots around the world; and an upgraded section on robotic terminology. Chapter references; exhaustive subject index; illustrations and photographs. Recommended for general readers, upper-division undergraduates, professionals, graduate students, researchers, and hobbyists. P. K. Basu; Vanderbilt University
