Choice Review

Redesigning organizations around teams and the expansion of information technology (IT) are major forces of change in organizations today, but many view their results as disappointing. The authors' premise is that each of these forces is necessary to take full advantage of the possibilities of the other. Based on the authors' research at the RAND Corporation and the Center for Effective Organizations, this work proposes a mutual design and implementation (MDI) framework for combining new work arrangements (user teams) with the concurrent development of new information systems the teams will use, and embedding the result in an appropriate organizational context. This very readable book will be of value to those interested in organizational development, business reengineering, and information technology. The authors include information on developing an MDI framework, creating the systems and user teams, implementing designs, and policy and structural changes required to make organizations more effective. Comparisons are made with traditional and rapid application development methods; iterative prototyping (the spiral workflow method) is recommended to support the MDI framework. Highly recommended for upper-division undergraduate and graduate business collections, as well as professional and large public libraries. R. T. Firtko Metropolitan State University
