Abstract:
The project deals with drag estimation of transport aircraft at subsonic speed. The drag estimated includes induce drag adn drag at zero lift coefficient. Three methods have been investigated as follows. The first method by J R Wedderspoon consists of two parts. The first part is applied throughout various design stages. Once the design has been completed, wind tunnel testing on the scale down model is carried out. The second method by Jan Roskam also consists of two parts. The first part can be employed during preliminary design studies and the second part concerns with estimating drag polars. The final method investigated concerns with the use of the Engineering Science Dat a Unit. This method relies on experimental data. The advantages and disadvantages of the above methods were analysed and a new nethod of predicting the darag was produced by combining the procedures incorporated in those methods. To verify the accuracy of this new method a case study on a Caribou aircraft was carried out. The maximum possible drag arised during climb aws used as a basis of calculating this drag.
