Liu's handbook, which deals with the effects of wind on the response of structures, is a practical and succinct treatment of a subject that does not usually receive adequate coverage in undergraduate civil engineering programs. Liu provides useful information on the general characteristics of wind, the wind pressures that are applied to structures, and the resulting dynamic structural response. Futhermore, he devotes a chapter to the important subject of scale model testing of structures/structural systems in wind tunnels. The final chapter deals with current building codes and standards. Practicing structural engineers should find this book of great value, although it does not treat the subject of wind in as much depth as the two-volume set by N.J. Cook, The Designer's Guide to Wind Loading of Building Structures (V.1, CH, Oct'86; V.2, CH, Jan'91). The handbook format and the fact that the author is primarily concerned with weather conditions in the US make it a valuable reference. Recommended for undergraduate engineering libraries. -J. F. Carney III, Vanderbilt University
