Summary

Summary

Climate change is no longer merely projected to occur in the indeterminate future. It has already begun to be manifested in the weather regimes affecting agroecosystems, food production, and rural livelihoods in many regions around the world. It is a real and growing challenge to the world at large and in particular to the scientific community, which is called upon with increasing urgency to respond effectively. The second volume in the ICP Series on Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation, and Mitigation, Handbook of Climate Change and Agroecosystems: Global and Regional Aspects and Implications is published jointly by the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America and Imperial College Press. The ongoing series is dedicated to elucidating the actual and potential impacts of climate change, and to formulating effective responses to this global challenge. It is designed to inform, spur, and integrate the work of leading researchers in the major regions of the world, and to further international cooperation in this crucial field.

Reviews 1

Choice Review

This second volume in Imperial College Press's global climate change series is a welcome addition to the literature. It is divided into three parts: agronomic contributions to climate change solutions, regional perspectives on adaptation to climate change, and activities related to improving climate change solutions. As in volume 1 (subtitled Impacts, Adaptation, and Mitigation; CH, Aug'11, 48-6912), the editors and contributors accept global climate change as reality--without attributing cause--and take a multidisciplinary overview of response to that change from an agronomic perspective. The strengths of the current work are its truly global coverage, in which specific effects of climate change are discussed by region as well as agricultural adaptations planned and in place. The global synopsis is preceded by two excellent chapters addressing the adaptation of agriculture in response to climate change. The volume's weakness is an insufficiently ruthless pruning of chapter content that is tangential to the central theme of the book. The latter chapters particularly suffer in this respect. Overall, this book is clearly written, generally mistake-free, and filled with an appropriate mix of text and easily interpretable figures and tables. Summing Up: Recommended.
