Booklist Review
This handsome, sturdy paperback has movie-theater authority Naylor, author of American Picture Palaces (Booklist 78:578 Ja 1 82), conducting a region-by-region, state-by-state, town-by-town tour of the best remaining objects of his expertise. The format here puts key information-name, address, architect, and date-in the outer margins along with many of the pictures and all of the captions. Theater descriptions take account of current condition and accessibility to the public and conclude with mention of ownership and predominant current use, as well as notations of whether the building or its area is in the National Register. Introductory chapters sketch the history of movie theaters and efforts to preserve or revamp old ones. A concluding chapter hails great film palaces that fell to the wrecker's ball. Illustrations throughout are clearly detailed despite small dimensions. Appended: lists of further reading and of organizations and agencies that provide information on movie theaters; index. Library Journal Review
This is a ``selection of the greatest movie theaters still standing in big cities and small towns across the United States.'' Other books, including Naylor's own American Picture Palaces ( LJ 12/1/81), have described the movie theaters of the 1920s, but this treatment is comprehensive. Over 300 theaters are organized by six geographical regions, then arranged alphabetically by state, city, and theater name. Entries give the architect, date of opening, current ownership and use, and the architectural design and the theater's history. Most theaters are shown by at least one photograph. Recommended.
