Summary
Summary
A fine book on a remarkably strong, flexible, and versatile material. It is concerned with the giant bamboo, Guadua, growing in highland Colombia. Covers natural history, the promising new in vitro cultural techniques, but largely the structural and decorative uses: dams, bridges, retaining walls, houses, barns, coffee sheds. We regret that bamboo paper is ignored. Some 300 color photos. Most of the text occurs as long caption to these fine pictures. No index. What a gorgeous book this is--an album of color photographs of guadua bamboo of Old Caldas, the coffee-growing region in Colombia. Guadua bamboo not only covers the landscape, it is used in construction--as water pipes, for bridging streams--and is also viewed as artifact material. The text discusses bamboo's many uses and its prospects for survival. The stunning photographs are to be looked at again and again. Bibliography; no index. --George Cohen
