Summary

Summary

This revised and expanded reference for biochemical engineers, microbiologists, food technologists, and process engineers assists the development of both large and small biotechnological processes by establishing for the unit processes and unit operations involved: their scientific and engineering basis; their performance and operating characteristics; the factors which influence their performance; and their integration into complete processes. The present edition (first, 1983) is updated throughout and expanded with the addition of six new chapters on: process biotechnology techniques; plant cell culture; animal cell culture; upstream processing; measurement and instrumentation; and principles of costing and economic evaluation of bioprocesses. Choice Review

Atkinson and Mavituna reconfirm their authority in the immense area of biochemical engineering and very ably stretch their credentials into the dynamic expanse of biotechnology. This book is a remarkable attainment beyond their highly acclaimed first edition (1983), both in substance and style. Six extra chapters and several extensive reorganizations of subject matter testify to a bona fide endeavor to catalog factual relevancy where perhaps the greatest knowledge explosion has occurred during the past decade. Several stylistic changes are also notable in making this new edition more functionally responsive to users' needs. Liberal usage of subheadings translates into a detailed table of contents whose format is certainly superior to the first edition's prose style. For such a copious compilation, a chapter table of contents simplifies the search for information. Moreover, a vastly augmented index consummates the effort to make information retrieval gratifying. Two-column pages are amply enriched with bold, clear typeset and comprehensible tables, figures, and illustrations. End-of-chapter references are helpful for identifying complementary readings such as James E. Bailey and David F. Ollis's classic Biochemical Engineering Fundamentals (2nd ed., 1986; 1st ed, CH, Dec'77); yet the most recent reference date of 1989 implies failure to be current. Academic libraries will need this handbook. R. E. Young; Clemson University
