This 1,300-plus-page book is the "bible" for physical and chemical analysis of drinking water, wastewater, surface water, and groundwater. It is the 22nd edition of a manual that has been available for more than a century (1st ed., 1905). The bulk of the text consists of detailed procedures for quantitative analysis including physicochemical properties, metals, other inorganics, aggregate and specific organics, radioactivity, toxicity, microbes, and higher organisms. Beyond its function as a cookbook, the first 67-page section is a thorough procedural guide on sampling, quality assurance, lab safety, lab waste minimization and disposal, and other ancillary topics, which would be useful material for a course on quantitative methods. The book is also noteworthy for its 27 black-and-white and 8 color plates illustrating aquatic organisms. The readership will primarily be persons involved in laboratory analysis of waster and wastewater, whether for quality control in treatment facilities or in research laboratories.
