This sourcebook of bridge designs and codes for the practising civil and structural engineer introduces the various structures and discusses the practical design process in detail. It addresses the fundamentals required in new bridge design and rehabilitation and maintenance for present highway structures. Some of the points included are superstructure design, substructure design, structure geometrics, traffic safety, contract documents, reports and plans. A disk of spreadsheet macros and stand-alone programs to save the reader time in performing the necessary calculations and equations is included.

Choice Review

Tonias provides a bridge engineering lexicon for the novice designer. His direct, uncomplicated presentation provides a good foundation in bridge engineering very focused on one type, the slab-on-stringer geometry. As most bridges are of this type, the book does address those problems most bridge engineers must face. Significant coverage is given to the influences of the maintenance and rehabilitation of bridges along with normal design comments. Design examples are presented in work-sheet format, much like those a designer prepares. Bridges of both steel and concrete beam superstructures are discussed in relation to pertinent sections of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials' Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges (15th ed., 1992). In addition, a chapter on substructure or foundation design provides project completion. Tonias's expertise in computer graphics is evident from the excellent quality of the sharp and clear illustrations. There is more emphasis on design details than in Petros P. Xanthakos's Theory and Design of Bridges (CH, Apr'94) which is much broader, covering all major bridge types and directed more to analysis. Conrad P. Heins and D.A. Firmage's Design of Modern Steel Highway Bridges (Sep'79) and the Highway Structures Design Handbook from the American Institute of Steel Construction (1986) do address similar design problems but assume their readers to have more background; they do not cover maintenance and rehabilitation aspects as does Tonias.
