Choice Review

McDaniels (counselor education, Virginia Polytechnic) has worked on the career information system for the state of Virginia and has considerable expertise on future trends in employment. In this book he examines three scenarios for the future of work: the growth of high-technology and exotic occupations; the absence of dramatic changes in the workplace; and rising unemployment and downgrading of jobs. The implications of these possibilities are explored along with future opportunities in the areas of entrepreneurship, small business, and home-based jobs. The integration of work and leisure to provide satisfaction over the life cycle is discussed in the last section. McDaniels summarizes and integrates in a very practical way much of what is known about careers in the 1990s. Recommended for public as well as academic libraries at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Especially worthwhile for education and business collections. -M. D. Fottler, University of Alabama in Birmingham
