Moss-Jones presents a thoughtful study of a timely and important issue in the management of information technology (IT), a study that points up the complexity and difficulty of doing organizational research in this area. The author collected detailed data from five companies primarily through interviewing a number of representative managers in each company. The data were used to compile five case studies of the companies as well as to examine a set of hypotheses that were generated from the current literature and the author's personal experience. The results suggest an interesting picture of the effects of IT on managerial work as mediated through organizational culture, structures, and processes. Readers will benefit from the well-written discussion of the impact of IT in the workplace as well as from the detailed research methodology used in the study. The references are up to date, and the index is useful. Recommended for graduate and upper-level undergraduate students as well as for organizational managers and administrators. -E. J.
