Abstract:
The recent increases in economic, scientific and military activities at sea have led to demands for higher quality and moree efficient offshore positioning computation techniques which, in particular, can makee use of integratedd positioning systems. The use of Kalman filtering using data from surface systems, GPS and underwater ascoustics has been investigatedd for this purpose. This thesis describes in detail the investigations carriedd out, using real and simulated data for navigation, prediction, smoothing and fixed lag smoothing. The calibration (relative and absolute) of the acoustic system is also investigated. A multipurpose computer program was developed to handle all aspects of these investigations. Output from the program includes an assessment of precision and reliability. Results have proven that Klaman filtering is indeed a suitable computation tool for a variety of offshore positioning applications.
