Choice Review

Beginning with the idea that leisure is best defined simply as free time, Shivers and deLisle provide a detailed examination of leisure as a significant aspect of human life. Part 1 examines the history of leisure from the prehistoric to the present. The result is one of the most extensive historical overviews of leisure available in a single text. A story at the beginning of each chapter describes the life of fictional archetypal individuals from that period, and the role leisure would have played in their lives. Also included are time lines of significant events affecting leisure. Part 2 discusses concepts, philosophies, and social-economic forces related to leisure. Case studies help describe these points. Though the introduction proclaims that the text will "deconstruct" other definitions of leisure, only a few pages are actually devoted to the task, and then only at a cursory level. Given the sociopsychological focus and absence of material on professional leisure service delivery, the book is best suited for liberal studies courses exploring the role of leisure in one's life, rather than introductory professional courses.
