Choice Review

Professors from the Center for Policy Research in Education (CPRE) have collaborated on a comprehensive examination of the underlying issues involved in the US debate on educational reform. CPRE is a unique consortium of four institutions: the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University, the University of Wisconsin--Madison, Stanford University, and Michigan State University. The authors analyze the efforts and the sometimes conflicting proposals for three of the areas involved in the most common types of changes recommended in school restructuring: teaching and learning in schools, conditions of teachers' work in schools, and the governance and incentive structures under which schools operate. Among the problems addressed are outdated curricula in a technological society, unresponsive school bureaucracies, and high turnover of teachers. Written for several audiences, this will be a valuable addition to undergraduate libraries for aspiring teachers and social or political science majors. -J. C. Baxter, Northeastern Illinois University
