Choice Review

Dawley (educational technology, Boise State Univ.) has written a practical, understandable, and consistent reference book addressing the various tools integrated in most course management systems. She states early in the book that this text is grounded in the notion that "successful teaching involves facilitating students' achievement of learning objectives to engage and empower students as life-long learners." The author provides a solid introduction of each tool, its potential strengths and weaknesses, and organizing and optimizing material within it. Tools addressed include content areas, e-mail, discussion forums, small group learning, chat and instant messaging, audio/video conferencing and whiteboards, and assessment and survey tools; there is a section on blogs and wikis. Chapters contain a variety of examples addressing how to structure each individual topic and integrate resources for success, along with sample lesson plans and references. Although introductory in content, this book is useful for novice and experienced online teachers alike for the up-to-date information and the emphasis on in-depth understanding of effective technology tools in an online environment. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Graduate students through practitioners. M. Crisham Five Towns College
