Choice Review

This book treats several of the more salient current trends in the field of cognitive science. The 18 chapters are primarily derived from presentations and discussions recently held at a conference at SUNY Cortland. At first glance the chapters appear to cover an extremely diverse variety of animal and human topics; however, a closer reading provides one dominant theme of organization-an emphasis upon an ``ecological'' approach to the study of cognition. Within this context the authors suggest that cognitive scientists should expand their examination of cognition to include the study of cognition as it relates to ``real-life'' situations. The essays are very well written and contain both theoretical and data-related arguments for such an ecological orientation. Designed for persons familiar with some of the theoretical questions of concern to cognitive scientists, this book is ideal for undergraduate and graduate library collections in psychology and related disciplines.-N.J.
