Abstract:
"Nowadays classification is widely adopted and is considered as very important to several organization of information management. Library is one of common organization who adopts classification. Library classification forms part of the field of library and information science. A major goal of libraries is to safeguard that optimum use is made of their collections by leading each user as directly as possible to the material he or she needs. It is a form of bibliographic classification (library classifications are used in library catalogs, while “bibliographic classification” also covers classification used in other kinds of bibliographic databases). It goes hand in hand with library cataloging under the rubric of cataloging and classification, sometimes grouped together as technical services. The library professional who engages in the process of cataloging and classifying library materials is called a cataloguer or catalog librarian. Library classification systems are one of the two tools used to facilitate subject access. The other consists of alphabetical indexing languages such as Thesauri and Subject Headings systems. As an aide to the achievement towards this objective almost all libraries find it helpful and it is necessary to impose upon their books and other material one or more forms of subject control. The classification of library contains placing together in classes the objects which comprise characteristics in common and to dispersed from them the objects that do not have same characteristics. Classification also forms the basis of an order in handling literature and its records. It discloses the strengths and weaknesses of library collections and it is therefore vital for a systematic, comprehensive and representative book selection, through revision and drawing of unsolicited stock. Two-Volume ‘Brig’s Handbook of Methods & Research in Library Classification’ explores the classification systems used in library and the need and importance of library classification in the ICT era. ICT application is no exception to libraries and we can see it has alreadyrevolutionized library services and activities to a significant way. Any classification system we apply in any type of library acts as a backbone of library services. It not just helps inorganizing information and knowledge but also in its timely retrieval. Library classification assists the librarian to make available the requisite book to the reader in the shortest possible time. The purpose of any library classification system is to allow libraries to arrange the documents in a sequence that will be of immense help to the readers. The library classification system offers the leaders a basis for organizing books and other reading material so that these can be used by the readers as and when they desire. A variety of classification schemes have been developed in various countries throughout the world to maintain the library collections in the most helpful manner possible."
