Gas chromatography (GC) is useful for the examination of mixtures of organic substances. The technique, introduced into analytical chemistry in the early 1950s, is now considered to be the most widely used analytical tool in the organic analytical laboratory, and is certainly indispensable in forensic science. Although there are many books that discuss the theory and applications of GC, none have dealt solely with analytical problems peculiar to the examination of forensic samples. This book contains well-written and thoroughly-researched contributed chapters that describe the analysis of blood alcohol, the examination of street samples for drugs of abuse, the toxicological examination of biological fluids for drugs, and the analysis of debris for accelerants and explosives. The analyses of paints, plastics, and other polymers are reviewed in a chapter covering the subject of pyrolysis GC. The problems typically encountered by the forensic scientist, such as degraded samples and small sample size, are addressed. Each chapter is thoroughly referenced for the reader who needs to explore the subject matter in greater detail. This book is required reading for the practicing forensic scientist and students of forensic science. Others will find this book an excellent reference. Community college through professional. R.
