Trabant provides a good summary of the field of marine geophysics with special emphasis on the utilization of the several important techniques used to locate and delineate features beneath the sea that could threaten the stability or operation of an engineered structure. This reviewer knows of no other book that covers a significant amount of the material found found here. The types of equipment and techniques discussed include echo sounders, side-scanning sonar, subbottom profilers, seismic reflection, both single- and multichannel marine magnetometers. Additional chapters deal with the types of seismic sources utilized and with methods of navigation that are of help in vessel positioning. A list of recent references is included for each chapter as well as a supplemental reference list providing more general coverage of some aspects of the subject. This book should be in the library of universities offering graduate work in oceanographic science, marine engineering, and petroleum geology and engineering.-D.F. Eschman, University of Michigan
