Summary

Summary

Recent studies on the activities of RNA in the cell have revolutionized our understanding of the many roles played by this molecule. The first two editions of The RNA World (1993, 1999) shed light on the pre-biotic era dominated by this versatile molecule. The new Third Edition of The RNA World adds an up-to-date perspective, showing the richness of RNA roles in the modern world. The updated original chapters are supplemented with new chapters on RNA-protein complexes, SnRNPs and snoRNPs, Telomerase RNA, RNAi, Micro RNAs, Non-coding RNA, and many other subjects. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the biology of nucleic acids and gene regulation and a valuable resource for teaching these concepts.

Choice Review

Since publication of the first edition in 1993, this monograph has been an increasingly valuable aid to researchers wanting to make sense of the wide variety of RNA research that has taken place since the 1960s. This third edition admirably continues the tradition set by earlier ones. It offers a series of independent yet well-organized chapters, in which the foremost researchers in the RNA field present the most current knowledge and models of the role of RNA in chemical and cellular evolution. Many chapters are devoted to research on the chemistry of RNA in the modern world, and how that information can be used to provide insights into the history of life on earth. Topics include RNA as a regulatory and catalytic molecule, RNA modeling, and the use of RNA microarray applications. Each chapter is fully referenced, and most have numerous color figures. Taken as a whole, the book gives a complete, up-to-date snapshot of the RNA world. It will be most useful to researchers already active in the field, but others with a strong interest in molecular evolution will benefit as well. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
