Summary
Summary
Provides data and practical details of a variety of treatment processes. Cleanup of contaminated sites has, in the past, been generally limited to removal of the soil layer and haulage to a landfill. The legal responsibility for the waste, in many instances, however, remains the responsibility of the original generator. Many toxic wastes have been disposed of in secure landfills only to be found migrating off-site, usually in groundwater or as surface runoff, resulting in a secondary and equivocal liability. In case of contaminated groundwater, cleanup efforts were not made or have been limited to pump and treat over an undeterminable period of time resulting in long-term and escalating financial obligations.
