Summary

Summary

The World Conference on Hazardous Waste was organized within the framework of the United Nations Environmental Programme and was attended by experts in various fields of science who came from industrialized and developing countries all over the world. The conference was devoted to hazardous waste - specifically, the global problem of hazardous waste - and to the search for ways of achieving cooperation between scientists and policy makers. The study of hazardous waste is one that covers many divergent interests as well as many complicated scientific and technical problems; this was well illustrated by the scope and quality of the papers and reports presented at the conference, the full texts of which are given in this book. Sound management of the world's hazardous waste depends on international cooperation in formulating and implementing a universally accepted policy of hazardous waste disposal. A major step towards achieving this goal is the twelve-point plan drawn up by the World Conference Committee which incorporates the general conclusions and recommendations of the conference. The book is of international and interdisciplinary relevance and will thus have a wide appeal.
