Reviews 1

Choice Review

Various public health issues continue to perplex the scientific community, and the need to find evolving and innovative means of exploring these issues becomes ever more important. While the scientific and clinical communities have moved toward a more evidence-based medicine model, the use of complementary and alternative medicine has risen steadily in the past decades. The demand for high-quality, evidence-based health care represents a paradigm shift in health research, which this handbook explores. Essays focus on a wide range of topics within qualitative research investigation, including the philosophy of science, chaos theory, bioethics, reliability and validity issues, levels of research, and mixed methods approaches. With this volume, the editors--all internationally recognized experts in the social sciences--offer a valuable educational tool for instructors at either the undergraduate or the graduate level. Selected chapters should be useful complements to learning modules in the health and behavioral sciences. In addition, individual essays may be valuable for initiating in-class and online discussions. This handbook is appropriate for undergraduate students interested in research and for students enrolled in master's or doctoral degree programs. In addition, health care clinicians who want to investigate or implement evidence-based practices in their own institutions may find this handbook a helpful resource. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-level undergraduates and above. S. Williams CUNY - York College
