Choice Review

Newly titled, this update (1st ed., Illustrated Dictionary of Environmental Health and Occupational Safety, CH, Jun‘96) more than doubles the number of terms to 16,000 (from 7,500) and adds an extensive "Resource Directory" that lists many relevant professional and government organizations. Reflecting the broad scope of the expanding, evolving fields of environmental and occupational health, the terms cover such varied fields as epidemiology, microbiology, genetics, geology, computer science, and toxicology, providing a basic footing in the many disciplines related to environmental problems and their role in disease and injury. Although some of the simpler definitions are too brief to be useful, their inclusion helps demonstrate the complex, inextricable relationship between the environment and human and animal health. Cross-referencing for synonyms, abbreviations, and acronyms is thorough. Over 1,000 computer-generated, graphic illustrations provide striking depictions of the processes, instruments, and organisms covered. A useful resource for professionals, students, and general readers. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. Professional, academic, and large public libraries. C. A. Ross DePaul University
