Abstract:
A school building is actually a unit, a place where the process and activities of learning takes place. It is in this building, that the centre of education, which is one of the important tentacles of the learning process began : It is also here that the difference in techniques and patterns of education utilised yield or produce a difference with regards to the development and school building design. In our country (Malaysia), such development and design of any school building, be it the primary or on secondary level are influenced by factors such as those relating to fulfilling the country's needs, its condition to development and constrains in the education process. We cannot deny that the present standardised school building, basing on the above requirements, do solve the present problems of coping up with the rapid growth of new students every year and in shorter period too. Realizing that the role of an educationist is not only in moulding up the spiritual and physical part of an individual towards achieving a 'one society' with intellectual outlook, wise, worthy and responsible to his/he religion, kind and nation; but he is also responsible towards improving the school curriculum. it is the educationist's view, that the quality of education warranted, do depend on the background of the teachers, its teaching techniques and methods of learning. Looking at the architectural aspects of the problems, the process of designing any school, does not only require it to be a place of shelter from the elements of wether, but also a building that house a certain environment condusive to both effective and efficient methods of educating. Parallel to this, the educationists also recommend a sort of feedback; i.e. the reaction receives from students towards the curent curriculum, in order to upgrade the standard of education process, both physical and physhological, which does influence the school design as a whole. Problems concerning the differences towards the used of certain spaces with regards to activities, the facilities and instruments used in the learning process do appear in the design approach. But these aspects are only important to criterias in designing specific study areas (laboratories, home science, etc.). In line with the educationist objective in achieving a very high standard of education through the development of the curriculum and school building design, it is indeed recommendable that a study of the present existing schools be mode. It is through this study, that a basis of discussion was made and suggestions were given to the educationist and the designer/architect, in the hope that they will be able to produce or create an approach in design especially a planning concept of a building, that is not only efficient and effective but also economical in the future. OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE OF STUDY : Base upon those aspects mentioned, the main objective of this study is to actually uncover and analyse the conditions exists in the development of the present school building design. Hopefully this study will be able to gige a clear picture and a better understanding to both the educationist and designers/architects a a guide in producing a better, efficient and effective planning and design approach of a school building. These aspects includes : (a) Aspects that influence the set up of the present secondary school design - curriculum; (b) An understanding that activities, the facilities and the instrument used in the learning process are important criterias in the designing of study spaces; (c) Forwarding the aspects that governs the cost of school building.
