Choice Review

Gibson and colleagues discuss general principles and concepts of remote sensing, allowing this volume to serve as a typical introduction to the technology, along with its companion volume by Gibson and Power, Introductory Remote Sensing: Digital Image Processing and Applications (2000). With an organization and content standard to almost every other remote sensing book, the volume begins with a brief history of the technology and concisely reviews the fundamental physics of electromagnetic radiation, atmospheric interactions, and engineering aspects of imaging instruments. The volume then continues with a synopsis of imaging systems (though lacking in the recent advances) followed by a short chapter on applications organized by image resolution rather than the normal topical approach. Each chapter ends with a summary, self-test (answers in an appendix), and a list for further reading. Unlike most other books on the subject, this volume has a companion Web site that supplements the book with sample images, exercises with answers, and information on other remote sensing resources.
