Booklist Review

JIT--i.e., just in time--is one of the business world's newer acronyms. It's applied to a manufacturing process wherein goods are supplied exactly at the time they're needed in exactly the quantities needed. The concept comes from the Japanese and, when implemented, effectively trims waste and loss in everything from factory design to inventory management. Ansari and Modarress explain how JIT has worked so well for the Japanese and how to overcome resistance to the new procedures it requires; they also show how to adapt purchasing systems to JIT methods. The authors quite thoroughly detail the specifics of a JIT purchasing system, in this respect producing a book very similar to Grieco and comrades' identically titled tome (PT Publications, 1988). Libraries serving large business communities, however, could find shelf room for both. Notes; to be indexed. --David Rouse
